What I love most about a clear night sky is that there's nothing separating you from a clear, direct line of sight to a star light-years away.

Except, you know, miles and miles of atmosphere as well as random meteorites and UFO's floating around there that are too small to see.

That star could easily be dead right now, or at least by the time the light that it is emitting reaches earth, you will be dead.
